1000+ LBS of Trash at Tunitas Creek

Woooaaaw and EW! I think these two words were on everyone’s mouth this morning…

The trash situation is a getting out of hand at Tunitas Creek and this is unfortunately not the only concern. People have been camping over night by the dozen (last weekend 170 cars were counted on the side of the road) and there are no toilets at all nearby. The consequence is tons of human feces have been found in buckets, in the creek or on the beach and this is a very serious health and safety issue.

The good thing is, this cleanup ended up being a great gathering where motivated and influential individuals met: Julia from Flowstobay.org, Ben and Brandy from TLClocals.com who recently placed trash cans on the path, Greg from the Surfrider Foundation and Nicole David our Pillar Point Harbor Commissioner.

After picking up the trash today, we all agreed on our next goal: contact the right organizations and increase the public awareness and reinforce the “Pack it in, Pack it out” behavior. But we need more help, we need your help! So if you are part or know someone at the following organizations please, contact us: San Mateo County, California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California Department of Public Health and any others that you think would help.

The ~1000 lbs of trash that we picked up today was only the beginning! Volunteers from the Pacific Beach Coalition, the surfers and other wonderful locals that we met today are all ready to pitch in, and this is what matters. We can all make a difference and together we will contribute in bringing back Tunitas Creek to its pristine state.

THANK YOU so much to all the volunteers who came today, Tom, Myrna, Pauline, Dot, John, Rusty & Sue, Members of the YMSL Alpine Chapter, Adriana our new local connection, and the people we saw on the path who carried some of the trash back to the road.
