Earth Day
For over 40 years, Earth Day (April 22) has inspired and mobilized individuals and organizations worldwide to demonstrate their commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. The Pacifica Beach Coalition has been organizing Earth Day activities since 2005, and it we've made a tremendous impact. The goals of our Earth Day event are to:
- Provide citizens an opportunity to improve beaches, shorelines, watershed areas, and streets by removing litter or non-native plants;
- Provide hands on experience to volunteers who will see and pick up the excessive amounts of plastics and cigarette butts found on the beaches and streets while learning how harmful this litter is to our wildlife and native habitat;
- Inspire and educate the volunteers on actions they can do daily to make everyday Earth Day;
- Provide an opportunity for businesses to show their support of the earth and a clean city to the citizens of the Bay Area and the Earth Day volunteers.

California Coastal Cleanup Day
Held every September, the California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on the marine environment in the country. In 2010, more than 80,300 volunteers worked together to collect more than 1,100,000 pounds of trash and recyclables from our beaches, lakes, and waterways. The California Coastal Commission organizes this statewide cleanup on the same day as the Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup Day, making it one of the largest volunteer events of the year. The Pacifica Beach Coalition organizes local cleanup activities in support of California Coastal Cleanup Day.

Summer Clean Beaches Campaign (led by HOPE Services)
With the increased use of our beaches over the summer months and the decrease in groups and volunteers available to clean the beaches, it is a real challenge to keep them clean. To meet this challenge, the Pacifica Beach Coalition has partnered with HOPE Services in Half Moon Bay to clean the beaches in Pacifica over the summer months. Through HOPE's Community Based Activity Program, the Pacifica Beach Coalition has hired several young adults to clean 4 beach sites in Pacifica. This program is designed to give people with a wide range of developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate in community service. Members of the community are invited to join the cleanups as the beaches can use all the help they can get and the young adults of HOPE relish the opportunity to work and socialize with the community at large.

Adopt a Beach
The Pacifica Beach Coalition, in partnership with the California Coastal Commission, has launched the Pacifica Adopt-A-Beach program. The program is a great way for your organization, business, school, or community group to take action and help keep our beaches clean. Groups can choose any of the 5 beaches in Pacifica or Mussel Rock to adopt. Participants make a commitment to cleaning their beach at least three times a year, although school groups can fulfill their obligation with a single cleanup. Groups are encouraged to re-adopt at the end of the year. The Adopt-A-Beach program fosters feelings of pride and ownership as volunteers begin to care for "their" beach. The Pacifica Beach Coalition supplies all cleanup equipment and training for the cleanups. A Pacifica Beach Coalition volunteer will provide your group with a brief marine debris presentation prior to your first cleanup.
For more information on the Adopt-A-Beach program please contact Lynn Adams at 650-355-1668 or send an email to PickItUpPacifica@gmail.com.
