(Pacifica, April 21 2012)  Earth Day Window Painting contestants were welcomed to the stage at the Earth Day Celebration event hosted by the Pacifica Beach Coalition at Pacifica State Beach, Linda Mar on Saturday afternoon, April 21.  More than 30 participants, ranging in age from 5 to over 60, had gathered in Eureka Square over the weekend of Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15, to take part in the new event.  The result was 24 windows celebrating the sea turtle, our beautiful beaches, ocean, and the earth.
The grand prize was awarded to Rosa Davidson and Carmella Baldassare, who entered as part of the 8 – 10 year old age category.  Rosa and Carmella painted an evocative scene of a turtle in a beautiful pond with cat tails.  Reminiscent of the “Crying Indian” campaign in 1970, featuring Chief Iron Eyes Cody and the tagline “People start pollution.  People can stop it”, the turtle was crying as it looked at the discarded litter in the pond and a plastic bag floating in the air.

Arnita Bowman, who with her painting partner Henry won the “18 and over” category with their painting of “Pacifica Trees” and how they benefit us by removing carbon dioxide from the air, shared her thoughts.  “We attended an $80 wine tasting event at Fort Mason on Saturday and how much more we enjoyed the small town window painting and camaraderie for $10 on Sunday.  It is priceless to be old and feel like a five year old that is so proud of her finger painting.”

Additional honors went to:  Anjali, Sarah, Ari and Mari in the 5 – 7 year old category; Helene and Rose in the 8 – 10 year old age category; Carmen and Team Caitlin in the Age 15 – 15 category; and also to Emily and mother and daughter team Mary and Shirley in the 18 and over group.  Prizes included natural sea turtles made from organic cotton, sea turtle stickers, and also 95% post consumer recycled bags from Ressurected in Rockaway Beach.

Artists of all levels of expertise took part, including professional artist Janet Arline Barker who presented the Pacifica hills and shoreline in dramatic fashion.  Janet’s work is seen on three windows that front the studio of Ocean Yoga.  The work of art, though done with simple water based tempura paints, changes color as the sun shifts.

“The window painting contest was an idea to engage the community, expand visibility for our business areas, and create awareness about Earth Day,” said Cindy Abbott, Pacifica Beach Coalition member and part of the Earth Day Coordinating Committee.  With the support of Vasu Narayanan, Oceana Market owner, Eureka Square Shopping Center, LLC, kindly permitted the site to be used for the inaugural event.
