150,000 Cigarette Butts Sent to Terracycle

TerraCycle is an innovative environmental company, located near Boston, that recycles many different products normally destined for the waste stream into products that can be reused.  Brigades of volunteers collect them and ship them to their company free of charge. Cigarette butts, ash, and silver paper inserts, collected by cigarette butt brigades are recycled, into guitar picks, jewelry, and ash trays.
Since August of 2014, PBC member and Mussel Rock site captain Helen Nicely and other PBC members have collected filters from most of their cleanups and shipped box after box full to TerraCycle using their prepaid UPS shipping labels.
As of May 2016 – over 150,000 filters have been logged into their record book!  Another 15,000 butts collected on Earth Day in a two hour time period from our coastlines, streets, parking lots, parks and open spaces will be shipped to them soon.
